Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 100mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100

The AirTAC SAILB40X100 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without relying on live pressure. In the 40mm bore class, it generates 879N of push force and 528N of pull force at 0.7 MPa, utilizing a 16mm carbon steel rod with an M12x1.25 thread.

This locker-end variable air cushion is notably shorter at 20mm compared to the 27mm cushion on the free end, a specific design accommodation for the locking hardware. The lock engages automatically as a static holding device once the piston reaches the stroke terminal, meaning it is not designed to brake a moving rod or clamp at arbitrary mid-stroke positions. For position sensing, adding the -S magnet option enables compatibility with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Power-Off Safety

Prevents vertical loads from dropping when air pressure is lost, utilizing the back cover lock to hold the rod securely in the retracted position.

conveyor_belt

End-of-Stroke Hold

Maintains a stopped conveyor gate or clamp firmly at the retracted stroke end without consuming continuous compressed air.

shield

Static Load Securement

Provides a reliable mechanical lock for safety gates or lifts that must remain closed and secured during machine idle periods.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 40mm bore cylinder when an application requires holding a load at the retracted position during a power loss; if you need to step up thrust, the 50mm bore offers 1374N push at 0.7 MPa, or step down if lower force is acceptable. Select SAILB to hold the rod-in position, whereas SAILF holds the extended position; if your process requires locking at a mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead. Always avoid fast-exhaust valves with this lock cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. When replacing, verify the 100mm stroke, back locker position, 1/4 PT port thread, and your required mounting style from the ISO 15552 interchangeable set (Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, FTC, TCM1, TCM2).

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100 FAQ

The 40mm bore generates 628N push and 528N pull force at 0.5 MPa, increasing to 879N push at 0.7 MPa, with a maximum thrust of 128 kgf at 1.0 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only at the retracted stroke end to hold the load statically. It unlocks automatically via air supply or manually via a lever, but it does not clamp at mid-stroke.
