Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 100mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100S

The AirTAC SAILB40X100-S is a double-acting, single-rod profile cylinder with a built-in mechanical lock in its back cover. Dimensionally interchangeable per ISO 15552, it features a carbon steel rod and a magnetic piston for use with CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors. The integrated lock is spring-applied and air-released, meaning it safely holds the load at the retracted stroke end whenever release air is cut, requiring no live pressure to maintain position.

Operating at a 30-800 mm/s speed range, this 40mm bore generates 628N of push force at 0.5 MPa. To unlock the rod, you simply supply air to the release port or use the manual override lever. Note that the variable air cushion at the locker end is shorter (20mm) than the free end (27mm), a specific design trait to accommodate the locking mechanism without sacrificing end-of-stroke deceleration.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Hold

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops on vertical lifting actuators.

conveyor_belt

Clamp and Hold

Maintains grip on parts at the end of the retraction stroke without consuming continuous air supply, saving energy during machine pauses.

shield

Safety Gate Lock

Keeps protective machine gates and guards locked shut in the home position until the system actively supplies release air to open them.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 40mm bore when your application requires 628N of push force at 0.5 MPa; step down if your load is lighter, or step up to a 50mm bore (982N push) for heavier dynamics. Select the SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be secured in the retracted position, whereas a SAILF variant holds the extended rod. If your machinery requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end hold, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

For safe integration, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder; back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock, so an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. This is a static holding lock that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. If human safety depends on the load staying retracted, always add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement matches require a 40mm bore, 100mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X100S FAQ

The 40mm bore generates 628N of push force and 528N of pull force at 0.5 MPa. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 879N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end. It holds statically without live pressure; supply air to the release port or use the manual lever to unlock.
