Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X200

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X200 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 200mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X200

The AirTAC SAILB40X200 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This locking mechanism engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securely holding the load in place without requiring continuous live air pressure. It delivers a push force of 879N at 0.7MPa, making it well-suited for compact pneumatic setups.

The lock releases automatically by supplying air to the dedicated release port, or manually via the override lever. To accommodate the locking hardware, the variable air cushion at the locker end is shortened to 20mm compared to the 27mm cushion on the free end. The barrel is extruded aluminum, and the standard carbon steel rod handles industrial side loads effectively.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X200 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Retract Safety

Holds a vertical load securely at the retracted stroke end when air pressure drops, preventing gravity-driven crashes in lifting rigs.

lock

Clamp and Hold

Maintains a locked retracted position on clamping fixtures during power loss, keeping the workpiece secured without live air.

shield

Gate Safety Hold

Secures safety gates or doors in the closed retracted position, requiring an active air release signal to unlock.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X200 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 40mm bore when your application requires holding a retracted load safely upon power loss, stepping up from smaller non-lock cylinders to gain a reliable 879N push force at 0.7MPa. If your load must be held at the extended stroke end instead, select the SAILF40X200. For applications requiring the rod to be clamped at an arbitrary mid-stroke position rather than a stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

Remember that this lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; utilize an independent-exhaust solenoid valve instead. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, always add an independent safety measure. Ensure your replacement matches the 40mm bore, 200mm stroke, back locker position, PT 1/4 port, and desired mounting style.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X200 FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, the push force is 628N and the pull force is 528N. At 0.7 MPa, the push force is 879N, and at 0.9 MPa, it reaches 1130N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only at the retracted stroke end to hold the load statically. It unlocks automatically via air supply to the release port or manually via a lever, but it cannot clamp at a mid-stroke position.
