Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X700S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X700S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 700mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X700S

The AirTAC SAILB50X700-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a pin into the rod to securely hold the load at the retracted stroke end without requiring live pressure. You can unlock it automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever. In the 50mm bore class, this actuator delivers a 982N push force and an 825N pull force at 0.5 MPa.

This model includes a magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors, which ride in the dual-side grooves of the extruded aluminum barrel. A notable design detail is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is shorter (20mm) compared to the free end cushion (30mm), ensuring the deceleration phase does not interfere with the lock engagement. The standard carbon steel rod provides durable service, and the fluid porting utilizes PT tapered threads.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X700S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Power-Off Safety

Prevents elevated platforms or heavy vertical lifts from crashing down when air pressure drops by mechanically locking the rod in the retracted position.

conveyor_belt

Pallet Line Indexing

Holds a conveyor stopper pin firmly in the retracted stroke-end position during pallet transit, ensuring the pin cannot creep back out unexpectedly.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Hold Fixtures

Secures a machining fixture in its open retracted state during part loading, guaranteeing the clamp stays clear even if the air supply is interrupted.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X700S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this specific 50mm bore if your application requires a 982N push force at 0.5 MPa; if you need substantially more thrust, stepping up to the 63mm bore yields 1559N. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be held safely in the retracted position upon power loss, whereas a SAILF variant would hold the extended end. If your process demands clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end static hold, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

Remember that this lock engages only after the cylinder has stopped moving; it is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake. For pneumatic plumbing, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can accidentally release the pin. Instead, install an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. Given the 700mm stroke, mounting should carefully manage side loads by using a non-rotating guide or an appropriate ISO 15552 mounting accessory like FA or TC to prevent rod binding. To replace this unit, match the 50mm bore, 700mm stroke, back locker position, PT ports, and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X700S FAQ

At a 0.5 MPa operating pressure, the 50mm bore provides a push (extend) force of 982N and a pull (retract) force of 825N. At the maximum 1.0 MPa pressure, it can deliver up to 200 kgf.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, meaning it engages automatically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end and air is cut off. To unlock it, you supply release air to the designated port or use the manual release lever. It only holds at this stroke end and will not clamp a moving rod at mid-stroke.
