Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X25S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X25S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 25mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X25S

The AirTAC SAILB80X25-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air automatically drives a lock pin into the rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without relying on live pressure. In this 80mm bore configuration, the cylinder generates 2268N of pull force at 0.5MPa, making it well-suited for heavy vertical holding tasks.

This specific model includes a magnet for position sensing and is equipped with a carbon steel rod. The locker end utilizes a 22.5mm variable air cushion, which is intentionally shorter than the 36mm cushion on the free end to accommodate the locking hardware. For precise end-of-stroke detection, the integrated magnet is fully compatible with AirTAC CMSE reed switches and DMSE solid-state electronic sensors.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X25S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Prevents gravity-driven drops on lifting platforms by engaging the lock at the retracted stroke end the moment air pressure is removed.

lock

Clamp and Hold

Maintains a secure clamping force on heavy workpieces at the rod-in position without continuously consuming compressed air.

shield

Power Failure Protection

Secures machinery gates and guards in the retracted state during sudden power or air loss events until the release port is re-pressurized.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X25S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 80mm bore cylinder when an application demands robust load holding upon retraction, as the back-mounted lock engages only at the rod-in stroke terminal. If your setup requires holding the load at an arbitrary mid-stroke position rather than the end, you must choose the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead. Furthermore, the SAIL lock is a static holding device that engages after the piston stops, meaning it will not act as a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

When integrating this model, avoid using a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. For safety-critical suspended loads, always add an independent mechanical safety measure. To specify a correct replacement, verify the 25mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port threads, and the required -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X25S FAQ

At an operating pressure of 0.5 MPa, this 80mm bore cylinder provides 2513N of push force and 2268N of pull force. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end. It unlocks automatically when air is supplied to the release port, or manually via the release lever.
