About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X100

The AirTAC BSAID40X100 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod design and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers an equal thrust of 528 N in both extension and retraction directions at 0.5 MPa. A defining characteristic of this enclasp mechanism is its ability to lock the piston rod at any position along the 100 mm stroke, providing a documented static holding force of 900 N. It is critical to distinguish this holding force from the cylinder thrust; you must size the 900 N clamp capacity against your static load, not the 528 N drive force.

Because it is a double-rod unit, one end can mount the workpiece while the opposite end carries a guide, counterweight, or position flag for dual-side guidance and anti-rotation. The clamp engages via an internal spring and releases only when 0.15-0.7 MPa air is applied to the dedicated G1/8 enclasp port. Remember that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends; the mechanical clamp is the sole device holding the load. Furthermore, the lock engages strictly after the rod has stopped moving, meaning it cannot function as a dynamic brake.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

900 N
static holding force (Ø40 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N
0.7 MPa (max)880 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (900 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X100 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Position Hold

Maintains a 900 N load securely at any intermediate height on a vertical lift without relying on continuous air pressure.

shield

Power Loss Safety Hold

The spring-applied clamp engages instantly anywhere in the 100 mm travel during an unexpected pneumatic power failure.

precision_manufacturing

Machining & Inspection Lock

Uses the double-rod design for anti-rotation guidance while locking the workpiece rigidly for precise milling or gauging.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X100 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select this double-rod model when a load must be held securely at an intermediate stroke position and equal force is required in both directions. If your application only requires holding at the stroke end, a SAIL unit suffices, but the BSAID40X100 provides bidirectional locking anywhere along the travel. If you need higher force, stepping up to a 50 mm bore yields 825 N of thrust and a 1400 N holding capacity. Conversely, a 32 mm bore drops thrust to 345 N and holding force to 600 N.

For safe operation, unlock the clamp only after balancing the air pressures on both sides of the piston to prevent abrupt rod jumps, and add an independent safety measure for human-safety-critical holds. This 40 mm bore configuration features a 16 mm carbon steel rod with an M12x1.25 thread, PT porting, and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2 mounts. Since no magnet is specified, position sensing requires adding an -S variant to support CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X100 FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 900 N. It locks the rod at any position along the stroke bidirectionally, but only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving.

Release the clamp by applying 0.15-0.7 MPa air to the G1/8 enclasp port only after balancing piston pressures to prevent sudden rod jumps. Unlike the single-rod BSAI, the BSAID features a rod out both ends for dual-side mounting and equal 528 N thrust both ways.
