About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X900

The AirTAC BSAID63X900 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the load at any position along its 900 mm stroke, delivering a static holding force of 2200 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 1402 N (the pull-side value at 0.5 MPa), and having a rod extend from both end caps allows you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation.

It is crucial to distinguish holding force from thrust: the 2200 N clamp rating is the mechanical grip on the rod, entirely separate from the 1402 N pneumatic thrust that moves the load. The variable air cushion at stroke ends only decelerates the piston; it does not hold the load. Furthermore, this clamp requires a third G1/8 enclasp port to release, and operates within a 0.15-0.7 MPa range to ensure pressure can be balanced before unlocking.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

2200 N
static holding force (Ø63 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø63mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa1559 N1402 N
0.7 MPa (max)2182 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (2200 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X900 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Mid-Stroke Hold

Pauses a heavy vertical lift at any point in the 900 mm travel, engaging the 2200 N clamp to secure the load without relying on continuous air pressure.

precision_manufacturing

Dual-Side Machining Station

Uses the double-rod design to mount a part on one end and an alignment flag on the other, locking the assembly firmly for mid-stroke processing.

shield

Power Loss Safety Drop-Prevention

The spring-applied clamp engages automatically during an air failure, catching the load immediately after the rod stops to prevent uncontrolled descent.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X900 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod clamp-lock when a process requires pausing mid-stroke for machining or inspection, which a SAIL end-of-stroke lock cannot do. If the application only needs to hold at the fully extended or retracted position, a plain SAID cylinder without a lock is simpler. If you need higher clamping resistance, stepping up to the 80 mm bore provides a 3600 N hold and 2268 N thrust; if less is required, the 50 mm bore offers 1400 N hold and 825 N thrust.

At 900 mm of travel, the 20 mm carbon steel rod and M16x1.5 thread provide decent side-load capacity, but an external guide is strongly recommended to prevent binding. The clamp locks only after the rod stops moving—it cannot brake a moving actuator—and it must be unlocked with balanced pressures to prevent the rod from jumping. For safety-critical suspensions, add an independent mechanical measure. This model uses PT ports (3/8 cylinder, G1/8 enclasp), accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts, and lacks a standard magnet for CMSE/DMSE sensors.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X900 FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 2200 N. It grips the rod bidirectionally at any position along the stroke, but only after the cylinder has come to a complete stop.

The clamp is released via a third G1/8 enclasp port. You must balance the air pressures on both sides of the piston before unlocking, otherwise the rod can jump abruptly. An independent safety measure is required for human safety.
