About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X25S

The AirTAC BSAID80X25-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 3600 N at any position along its 25 mm stroke. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 2268 N (0.5 MPa). Buyers must distinguish between this clamp holding force and the cylinder's standard thrust: the 3600 N rating secures the static load, while the 2268 N thrust drives the motion.

This enclasp mechanism requires a third G1/8 unlock port in addition to the two 3/8 cylinder ports, operating within a balanced 0.15-0.7 MPa pressure range. The double-rod design allows mounting a workpiece on one end and a guide or position flag on the other for dual-side anti-rotation. Remember that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke end; the clamp itself is the device that holds the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N
0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Machining Fixture

Locks the part rigidly mid-stroke for machining or inspection, using the second rod for a position flag.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X25S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 80 mm bore model when an application demands 2268 N of thrust both ways alongside a robust 3600 N holding capacity. If your load is lighter, stepping down to a 63 mm bore offers 1402 N of thrust and a 2200 N hold, whereas a 100 mm bore provides 3681 N of thrust and a 5500 N hold for heavier fixtures. The BSAID80X25-S is preferred over a stroke-end-only SAIL cylinder when you must lock the load mid-travel. A plain SAID is sufficient if no intermediate holding is required.

Crucially, the clamp locks only after the rod has completely stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. It must be unlocked with balanced air pressures to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly. For safety-critical loads, an additional independent safety measure is required. This configuration includes a carbon steel rod, PT port threads, and an -S magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors. It supports Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts (omitting FB, CA, CB, CR). The 25 mm stroke is short, so side-load stress is minimized without an external guide.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X25S FAQ

The spring-applied clamp provides a static holding force of 3600 N. It engages at any position along the stroke to hold the load securely without live air pressure.

The clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. To unlock it safely, air pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced via the G1/8 enclasp port, preventing abrupt rod movement.
