Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 700mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700

The AirTAC SAILB40X700 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock built into the back cover. Because the lock engages at the retracted stroke end, it securely holds the 16mm carbon steel rod in place without requiring continuous live air pressure. At 0.7 MPa, this 40mm bore unit generates 879N of thrust, making it well-suited for lighter load-holding tasks.

A key design detail is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is only 20mm, deliberately shorter than the 27mm cushion on the free end to accommodate the locking hardware. The lock is a static holding device that engages after the piston stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. It unlocks automatically via release air or manually via a lever, and the barrel features dual sensor grooves for mounting CMSE or DMSE switches.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Prevents a raised load from dropping when air pressure is lost, securing the retracted rod position automatically.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Hold

Holds a conveyor gate or actuator firmly in the retracted end position during a power failure.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Secure

Maintains a static clamping force at the stroke end without consuming continuous compressed air.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 40mm bore model for lighter vertical loads requiring a reliable retracted-end hold. If your application needs more force, stepping up to the 50mm bore provides 1374N at 0.7 MPa. Select SAILB when the load must be secured in the retracted position, and choose SAILF instead if the extended position requires holding. For applications requiring the rod to be clamped at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

When integrating this lock cylinder, avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. Because the stroke is 700mm, using a side-load guide is recommended to prevent rod wear. If human safety depends on the load staying retracted, always add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement parts must match the 40mm bore, 700mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and standard mounting options.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700 FAQ

The 40mm bore generates a push force of 628N at 0.5 MPa and 879N at 0.7 MPa. The pull force is 528N at 0.5 MPa due to the 16mm rod displacement.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only at the retracted stroke end after the cylinder stops. It is a static hold, not a dynamic brake, and unlocks automatically via release air or manually via a lever.
