Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 700mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700S

The AirTAC SAILB40X700-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a carbon steel piston rod and a built-in mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because this is a SAILB configuration, the spring-applied, air-released lock engages when the rod reaches the retracted stroke end. It safely holds the load in that position without requiring continuous live air pressure. You can release the lock automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.

This bore 40 size provides 879N of push force and 528N of pull force at 0.7MPa, operating within a speed range of 30-800mm/s. The extruded aluminum barrel includes sensor grooves on both sides, and the included -S magnet enables precise position detection using AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic solid-state switches. Note that the variable air cushion at the locker end is shorter (20mm) than the free end (27mm), specifically engineered to accommodate the locking mechanism without sacrificing end-of-stroke deceleration.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds a lifted vertical load securely at the retracted stroke end during a power loss, preventing sudden drops until air is restored to release the lock.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Stop Gate

Maintains a retractable gate in the closed position without consuming continuous air, keeping the conveyor lane securely blocked until signaled to open.

shield

Clamp and Hold

Provides a reliable static hold at the end of the retraction stroke for clamped workpieces, ensuring the load stays firmly in place even if pneumatic pressure fluctuates.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this SAILB model when your application requires a static hold specifically at the retracted rod-in position. If you need a higher force class, stepping up to a bore 50 cylinder yields 1374N of push force at 0.7MPa; conversely, if you need to hold the load at the extended rod-out position, select the SAILF variant instead. If your application demands clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end hold, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

The lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Valve selection is critical: never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock. Always use an independent or individual-exhaust solenoid valve. Because this model features a 700mm stroke, external guide rails are highly recommended to manage side loads and prevent rod binding over the extended travel distance. For safety-critical loads that could injure operators if they drop, add an independent mechanical safety measure beyond the pneumatic lock. This unit uses PT tapered ports and accepts the full range of ISO 15552 mounting accessories.

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X700S FAQ

At a standard operating pressure of 0.7MPa, this bore 40 cylinder generates 879N of push force and 528N of pull force. It operates at speeds between 30 and 800mm/s.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It engages as a static hold after the cylinder stops. You can unlock it automatically by supplying air to the release port or manually via the release lever.
