AirTAC Double-Rod Cylinders

The AirTAC double-rod family spans 15454 part numbers across 27 series: rod-through cylinders with equal push and pull force, anti-rotation and a second mounting point, from 20 mm minis to 200 mm ISO bores.

Series Overview

A double-rod cylinder carries its piston rod out of BOTH ends of the barrel. That single design change gives you three things a single-rod cylinder cannot: equal force in both directions (the rod no longer eats piston area on the retract side), built-in resistance to rod rotation, and a free second rod end you can use for a stop, a dog, a switch trigger or a second tool. The trade-offs are real but manageable: the cylinder is longer overall for the same stroke, and there are two rod seals to keep clean.

The fastest way to find your part is the D grammar: almost every series here is the double-rod version of a single-rod series. SAID (4166 parts, 32-200 mm) comes from the ISO 15552 standard family and is the mainstream choice - over a quarter of the whole family on its own. SAUD (1300, 32-100 mm) is its compact-profile sibling. SCD (1012) is the tie-rod version of the popular SC, SED (717) the ISO 15552 / VDMA version of SE, SGCD (170) the large-bore ISO option, and JSID (316) the JIS version. The compact family gives you ACED (791, ISO 21287), ACQD (838, JIS), ACPD (969, DIN), SDAD (782, thin body) and TACED (320, which adds guided, non-rotating motion). The mini family covers the 20-40 mm class in aluminium and stainless: MBLD 261, MBLCD 260 (both cushioned variants), MID 203, MICD 198, MAD 144, MACD 165, MFD 155, MFCD 161, MGD 116 and MGCD 167. Where the parent series carried a C suffix, the C still means an adjustable air cushion at both ends.

Three legacy series - SID (936 parts), SUD (700) and MALD (207), together 1843 part numbers - are discontinued and stay listed because machines in the field still use them. SID routes to SAID, SUD to SAUD, and MALD to MBLD as the upgrade; genuine legacy parts remain quotable for maintenance, while new machines should be specified on the replacement. TN (291), TR (21) and SGD (88) are twin-rod series whose specifications are confirmed on request - send us the code and we confirm the details.

Typical Applications

precision_manufacturing

Push-pull clamping on machining fixtures

A clamping edge that must pull a fixture closed as hard as it pushes it open needs equal force both ways - exactly what the rod-through design delivers. SCD or SAID in a standard bore suits machine-tool fixtures and workholding.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor stops and diverters with position feedback

Two rods resist twisting, so a stop blade stays square to the product flow without an external guide, and the far rod end can carry a dog or switch trigger. Compact bodies like ACQD or SDAD fit tight conveyor framing.

packing

Box pushing and ejection on packaging lines

Ejecting cartons takes a real push AND a real return stroke to reset fast. An SDAD or ACED double-rod cylinder gives symmetric force in both directions in a short body, with the second rod end available for a sensor flag.

build

Small tooling and jigs in the 20-40 mm class

Miniature double-rod versions - MBLD, MID, MFD and their cushioned C variants - bring anti-rotation and equal push-pull to small jig clamping, part transfer and test setups where a full-size body will not fit.

How to Choose the Right Model

Start with the question that decides everything: why do you need the second rod? If you need equal push and pull force, anti-rotation for tooling that must stay square, or a second mounting and sensing point, a double-rod cylinder is the right call. If none of those apply, the single-rod parent series is shorter and cheaper. If you already know the single-rod series that fits the machine, add D to its code - SC becomes SCD, ACE becomes ACED - and you usually have your answer. Then pick the size class: standard bores for the big work (SAID, SAUD, SCD, SED, SGCD, JSID), compact bodies when space is tight (ACED, ACQD, ACPD, SDAD, TACED), or the M-series D versions for the 20-40 mm class. Choose TACED when you need guided AND non-rotating motion in a compact body. Allow for the extra overall length - a rod-through cylinder is longer than its single-rod equivalent for the same stroke, and the far rod end needs clearance in the machine layout.

Before ordering, confirm the five-point match on your target part number: bore, stroke, port and thread, mounting style, and the piston-magnet option if you need position feedback - the magnet must be specified at order time, and the matching switches live in the cylinder sensor family. If your loading has real side forces, step up to the guided cylinder family rather than relying on anti-rotation alone. If the rod must hold position without live air, a double-rod cylinder will not do it - the air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke end - so step out to the lock cylinder family. And if you are holding an old SID, SUD or MALD code, ask us to quote its replacement (SAID, SAUD or MBLD) instead.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Required force at your working pressure
  • ✓ Stroke and available mounting space
  • ✓ Port / thread type (PT / NPT / G)
  • ✓ Sensor / magnet option (-S)?
  • ✓ Side load — consider a guided model

Frequently Asked Questions

15454 published part numbers across 27 series. The standard family runs from the 32-100 mm SAUD up to the 32-200 mm SAID and SID, with SCD, SED, SGCD and JSID alongside. The compact family (ACED, ACQD, ACPD, SDAD, TACED) shortens the body, and the mini M-series D versions cover the 20-40 mm class. SAID alone accounts for 4166 part numbers, over a quarter of the family.

Identify the single-rod series you would have bought, then add D: SC becomes SCD, SE becomes SED, ACE becomes ACED, SDA becomes SDAD. The suffix letters carry over too - a C in the code still means an adjustable air cushion at both ends. Pick TACED when you need guided and non-rotating motion in a compact body, SAID when you want the ISO 15552 profile, JSID for JIS mountings.

All three are discontinued but remain listed and quotable for maintenance, because machines in the field still use them - 1843 part numbers in total. For new machines, specify the replacement: SID (32-200 mm ISO 15552) routes to SAID, SUD (32-100 mm) routes to SAUD, and MALD (20-40 mm aluminium mini) routes to MBLD. The replacements follow the same rule that replaced the parent series SI, SU and MAL.

TN (291 part numbers), TR (21) and SGD (88) are twin-rod series in this family whose series descriptions are not yet published; send us the code and we confirm the specifications directly. Every cylinder we ship is genuine AirTAC, sourced through an authorized export seller. Items are listed and orderable - lead time is confirmed on request, and position feedback requires the piston-magnet option to be specified at order time.
