A 3/2 valve has three ports — supply, outlet and exhaust — and two states. It either feeds the outlet or vents it to exhaust, and that is the whole job.
That makes it the right valve for a single-acting (spring-return) cylinder, on/off air blow, a clamp, switching a vacuum generator or suction cup, and piloting a larger valve.
It cannot run a double-acting cylinder. A double-acting cylinder needs air alternately on two sides, which takes a 5-port valve — the AirTAC 4V series.
A normally closed 3/2 valve feeding a single-acting clamp cylinder: energise to clamp, cut power and the spring retracts while the valve vents the clamp side. On a fixture that must open safe on every e-stop, that fail-to-vent behaviour is the point.
Wired to an M-code output at 24V DC, the valve switches a 1/4 inch air line to a blow nozzle and clears chips and coolant from the part between cycles, venting the nozzle line the moment the output drops.
The valve feeds a venturi vacuum generator that grips a carton through a suction cup; de-energising it cuts supply and vents the line so the carton drops on command. The DC24V coil connects straight to the machine PLC card.
Start with the fail-safe state: NC vents the outlet whenever power is lost, which is what most clamping and hold circuits want; NO does the opposite and keeps the outlet fed until energised. Then match the port to the actuator - 1/4 inch is the larger end of this family and suits a bigger single-acting cylinder or a higher-air-demand blow task than the 1/8 inch or M5 sizes. The coil voltage is fixed at order time: a DC24V coil must sit on a 24 volt DC supply, and it cannot be converted by rewiring. Flying lead versus DIN plug is purely a wiring-panel decision - this SKU is the pre-wired flying-lead version.
