Airtac SAILF Front Locking Pneumatic Cylinder SAILF100X450S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILF Front Locking Pneumatic Cylinder SAILF100X450S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø100mm bore, 450mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the front cover — it holds the load at the extended (rod-out) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILF Front Locking Pneumatic Cylinder SAILF100X450S

The AirTAC SAILF100X450-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the front cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the rod to securely hold the load at the extended stroke end without requiring continuous live pressure. Supplying air to the release port unlocks it automatically, or you can use the manual release lever. Equipped with a magnet, this unit supports CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors for position detection.

Delivering 5497N of push force at 0.7 MPa, this 100mm bore cylinder uses a 1/2 PT port and a 25mm carbon steel rod. The variable air cushion at the locker end is specifically shorter (24mm) than the free end cushion (36mm) to accommodate the locking hardware. The lock engages statically after the piston stops at the stroke terminal; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the extended (rod-out) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the front-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILF Front Locking Pneumatic Cylinder SAILF100X450S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Hold

Maintains an elevated load safely at the extended stroke end on the front cover side during a power loss event.

Clamp and Hold

Secures a workpiece at the end of the extension stroke without consuming continuous air pressure.

Gate Safety

Keeps heavy safety gates or guards locked open at the full extended position until intentionally released.

Is the Airtac SAILF Front Locking Pneumatic Cylinder SAILF100X450S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 100mm bore when 80mm (3518N push at 0.7 MPa) lacks the necessary thrust, or step down if 63mm (2182N) is sufficient. Select the SAILF configuration when you need the load held at the extended rod-out position; for retracted holding, SAILB is required. If your application demands locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, select the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

For safe operation, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve to prevent back-pressure on the front locker side from accidentally releasing the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying extended, add an independent safety measure. With a 450mm stroke, use a guide rail to support the rod and prevent excessive side-load wear. Replacement requires matching bore, stroke, front locker position, PT ports, and the -S magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the extended (rod-out) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILF Front Locking Pneumatic Cylinder SAILF100X450S FAQ

At 0.7 MPa it provides 5497N of push force and 3681N of pull force. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod statically at the extended stroke end when release air is cut. It unlocks automatically via air supply or manually via a lever, but it does not clamp at mid-stroke.
