This model is discontinued

AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ASE20X5SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ASE20X5SB in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP20X5SB

The AirTAC Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP20X5SB is a single acting, push (spring return) DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø20mm bore and 5mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ASE20X5SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.

About the Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP20X5SB

Single acting push cylinder with spring return: air extends the rod and the built-in spring retracts it, so the ASP20X5SB needs only one air line and rests normally retracted. This 20 mm bore size delivers 127.4 N of push at 0.5 MPa (190.2 N at 0.7 MPa), figures already net of the spring, and it starts working from just 0.2 MPa. The short ISO 21287-class body saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, which is why it slots into tight jigs and guarding where a full-length body will not fit.

The hard-anodized aluminium body carries an S45C hard-chrome rod with a male thread (the B code) and a fixed TPU bumper at each end. A practical sizing rule: count on roughly 76 N of real work at 0.5 MPa, which lifts about 6 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. Note that this model is discontinued - the current-production replacement is the ASE20X5, and the optional -S magnet on this unit lets CMSE / DMSE switches report rod position.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ASE20X5SB (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø20mm)

PressurePush force (spring return)
0.5 MPa127.4 N
0.7 MPa190.2 N

Single-acting push: air extends the rod; the return spring retracts it. Forces already net the spring; minimum working pressure is 0.2 MPa.

Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).

Where the Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP20X5SB Is Used

compress

Bottle capping press

A 127.4 N push at 0.5 MPa seats snap caps on cosmetic bottles in a 5 mm press move, with the spring retracting the plunger the moment air vents.

sensors

Part-present ejection

With the -S magnet fitted, a DMSE switch confirms the 5 mm eject stroke on a PCB push-off station, so the PLC knows every board left the nest.

precision_manufacturing

Fixture clamp toggle

About 76 N of usable clamping force at 0.5 MPa holds small aluminium brackets against a drill jig, and the short body fits inside the jig wall.

Replacing the Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP20X5SB with the ASE20X5SB

Compare by net force at 0.5 MPa: the 16 mm bore gives 78.4 N while this 20 mm bore gives 127.4 N, and stepping up to 25 mm reaches 210.1 N - pick the smallest bore that still clears your load with margin. The 5 mm stroke suits short eject or clamp moves, and the spring returns the rod home on air loss rather than holding a mid-stroke position. This unit already carries the -S magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches and a male rod thread; FA/FB flange, LB foot or CA/CB clevis mounting can be specified. Since the ASP is discontinued, order the ASE20X5 as the drop-in successor and confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.

Replacement checklist

  • ✓ Current-production ACE → ASE20X5SB
  • ✓ Same bore / stroke / force class
  • ✓ Confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT / G)
  • ✓ Add -S for magnet if you need sensors

Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP20X5SB FAQ

Push force is 127.4 N at 0.5 MPa and 190.2 N at 0.7 MPa, both already net of the return spring. Minimum working pressure is 0.2 MPa (28 psi), the range tops out at 1.0 MPa (145 psi) with 1.5 MPa (215 psi) proof, speed runs 50-500 mm/s, and the port is M5x0.8.

The short-body build saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it fits shallow pockets and guarding. A fixed TPU bumper at each end decelerates the rod at the ends of travel; it is not adjustable and never locks or holds a load. On air loss the spring simply drives the rod back to its retracted home position.
