This model is discontinued

AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ASE40X10S — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ASE40X10S in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X10S

The AirTAC Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X10S is a single acting, push (spring return) DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø40mm bore and 10mm stroke, 1/8" air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ASE40X10S (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.

About the Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X10S

The ASP40X10S is a single acting push cylinder with spring return: air extends the 12 mm rod and the internal spring retracts it, so one air line is all the plumbing needs. This 40 mm bore unit delivers 556.8 N of push at 0.5 MPa (808.1 N at 0.7 MPa), figures already net of the spring, and it starts moving from just 0.2 MPa. The S in the code means the optional -S magnet is fitted, so CMSE or DMSE reed and solid-state switches can be clipped on for end-of-stroke signalling.

Built as a short-body compact cylinder, it saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, which is why it slots into tight fixtures and guarding. The hard-anodized aluminium body carries a fixed TPU bumper at each end, and the S45C hard-chrome rod runs in a two-way grease-storing seal. Note that this model is discontinued: the current-production drop-in is the ASE40X10, and buyers should confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping. As a rule of thumb, plan on about 334 N (roughly 34 kg of force) of usable work at 0.5 MPa rather than the full rating.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ASE40X10S (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.

0.7 MPa808.1 N

Single-acting push: air extends the rod; the return spring retracts it. Forces already net the spring; minimum working pressure is 0.2 MPa.

Where the Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X10S Is Used

compress

Fixture clamping on a CNC lathe

A 10 mm push stroke with 556.8 N at 0.5 MPa clamps small aluminium blanks in a turning fixture; spring return clears the part the moment air is dumped, so unloading needs no extra valve.

packaging

Carton hold-down on a packing bench

The short body fits under a low guard on a semi-automatic carton sealer, pressing flaps for a moment while glue sets; the 0.2 MPa minimum pressure lets it run on shop air at the low end.

sensors

Presence check with switch feedback

Because this unit carries the -S magnet, a DMSE solid-state switch confirms the part is seated when the rod bottoms out on a plastics assembly line, wiring straight to the PLC input.

Replacing the Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X10S with the ASE40X10S

At 0.5 MPa this bore pushes 556.8 N net of the spring; step down to a 32 mm bore (352.5 N) for lighter clamping or up to a 50 mm bore (875.5 N) if the load grows. Because the spring always drives the rod home on air loss, do not use it to hold a mid-stroke position. The 10 mm stroke sits well inside the standard range for this bore, and the female M8x1.25 rod thread accepts standard knuckles. If you need position feedback, this -S version already carries the magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches; plain versions must be ordered with the -S code. For new projects, specify the ASE40X10 instead, as the ASP line is discontinued.

Replacement checklist

  • ✓ Current-production ACE → ASE40X10S
  • ✓ Same bore / stroke / force class
  • ✓ Confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT / G)
  • ✓ Add -S for magnet if you need sensors

Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X10S FAQ

It is a single acting push cylinder, so the quoted figures are already net of the return spring: 556.8 N at 0.5 MPa and 808.1 N at 0.7 MPa on a 40 mm bore with a 10 mm stroke. Working pressure is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi), proof pressure is 1.5 MPa (215 psi), speed range is 50-500 mm/s, and the 12 mm rod ends in a female M8x1.25 thread with a 1/8" air port. In practice, budget around 334 N, or about 28 kg of vertical lift with a 2:1 margin, for real work at 0.5 MPa.

Order the ASE40X10, the current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder that succeeds it: same 40 mm bore, 10 mm stroke and force class, with a matching short body and mounting family. Before swapping, confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions against your fixture, since the ASP was built to a DIN-standard footprint. The fixed TPU bumpers, hard-anodized aluminium body and optional -S magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches all carry over in the ASE range.
