AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ASE40X15SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. The AirTAC Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X15SB is a single acting, push (spring return) DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø40mm bore and 15mm stroke, 1/8" air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ASE40X15SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
A single acting push cylinder with spring return, the ASP40X15SB extends its 12 mm rod with compressed air and lets the return spring bring it home - one air line is all the plumbing it needs. This 40 mm bore unit delivers 556.8 N of push at 0.5 MPa (808.1 N at 0.7 MPa), both figures already net of the spring, and it starts moving from just 0.2 MPa. The male rod thread from the B code bolts straight to I/Y knuckles on the ISO 21287 mounting face.
As a short-body compact cylinder it saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it slots into tight fixtures a full-length body cannot reach. Practical sizing: at 0.5 MPa plan on about 334 N (roughly 34 kg) of usable push, which lifts about 28 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. The optional -S magnet is fitted on this model, so CMSE or DMSE switches read end positions directly. Note this model is discontinued; the current-production drop-in is the ASE40X15 - confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.

Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
The 556.8 N push at 0.5 MPa is enough to seat small bearings or press dowel pins in a compact jig, and the 15 mm stroke keeps the tooling stroke short and repeatable.
With the -S magnet fitted, CMSE switches confirm rod extension on a short-stroke divert gate where the 50%-shorter body is the only way to fit between guide rails.
Spring return drops the hold-down pad the moment air is lost, releasing cartons on a semi-auto sealer without needing a second valve line.
At 40 mm bore you sit mid-range: a 32 mm bore gives 352.5 N at 0.5 MPa if the load is lighter, while a 50 mm bore reaches 875.5 N for heavier clamping. The 15 mm stroke is within the standard range for this bore, so no made-to-order build is needed. Because the spring always drives the rod back on air loss, this cylinder retracts to home rather than holding a mid-stroke position - pick a double-acting ACE if you need to stop anywhere. The male rod thread suits clevis and knuckle linkages; FA/FB flange and LB foot brackets complete the mounting set. Order the ASE40X15 as the current replacement.
Replacement checklist
At 0.5 MPa the push is 556.8 N and at 0.7 MPa it is 808.1 N, both already net of the return spring. A practical rule is to load no more than about 60% of the 0.5 MPa figure, so plan for roughly 334 N of real work - about 34 kg - which corresponds to lifting around 28 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. Minimum working pressure is 0.2 MPa (spring pre-load must be overcome), the range is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi) with 1.5 MPa (215 psi) proof, speed 50-500 mm/s, and the 1/8" port depends only on the 40 mm bore.
The ASP family is no longer in production. The current-production drop-in is the ASE40X15, which swaps the P for an E and matches the same 40 mm bore, 15 mm stroke and force class in the ISO 21287 compact format. Before swapping, confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions against your fixture, since the ASP was built to a DIN-standard compact pattern. FA/FB flange, LB foot and CA/CB clevis brackets plus CMSE / DMSE switches (used with the optional -S magnet) carry over in the ASE range.
