AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ASE40X20 — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. The AirTAC Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X20 is a single acting, push (spring return) DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø40mm bore and 20mm stroke, 1/8" air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ASE40X20 (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
This is a single acting push cylinder with spring return: air extends the 12 mm rod and the internal spring retracts it, so only one air line is needed and the rod sits retracted whenever pressure drops below 0.2 MPa. At 0.5 MPa the 40 mm bore delivers 556.8 N of push force net of the spring, rising to 808.1 N at 0.7 MPa. The body is a hard-anodized aluminium compact build whose short form saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, which is why it slots into tight jigs and guarding where a full-length body cannot.
For sizing, treat roughly 334 N (about 60% of the 0.5 MPa rating) as the force available for real work, which corresponds to lifting around 28 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. The rod end carries a female M8x1.25 thread and the air port is 1/8". Note that the ASP family is discontinued; the current-production successor is the ASE40X20 in the same bore, stroke and force class, so confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.

The 556.8 N push at 0.5 MPa seats caps on 500 ml beverage bottles in a compact filling head, and the spring retracts the plunger the moment the air valve closes.
A 20 mm stroke is enough to swing a spring-loaded hold-down over a circuit board in an in-circuit test rig, with the short body fitting inside the fixture lid.
Mounted on a packaging conveyor, the rod kicks small cartons off the line at up to 500 mm/s, and the return spring clears the belt automatically between cycles.
Compare against neighbours before ordering: the ASP32X20 gives 352.5 N at 0.5 MPa if your load is lighter, while the ASP50X20 raises the figure to 875.5 N for heavier clamping. Remember the spring drives the rod home on air loss, so this unit will not hold a mid-stroke position. Mounting brackets from the FA/FB flange, LB foot and CA/CB clevis family bolt to the standard face, and if you need position sensing you must order the -S code to fit the optional magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches - without it no magnet is fitted. For new projects specify the ASE40X20, the drop-in replacement for this discontinued model.
