AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ASE40X20S — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. The AirTAC Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X20S is a single acting, push (spring return) DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø40mm bore and 20mm stroke, 1/8" air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ASE40X20S (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
Single acting push cylinder with spring return: air extends the rod and the internal spring retracts it, so the ASP40X20S needs only one air line and rests normally retracted. This 40 mm bore, 20 mm stroke unit delivers 556.8 N of push at 0.5 MPa (808.1 N at 0.7 MPa), figures already net of the spring, and it starts moving from just 0.2 MPa. Note that the ASP family is discontinued; the current-production replacement is the ASE40X20 in the same bore, stroke and force class.
The short ISO 21287-class body saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, which is why it slots into tight jigs and guarding where a full-length body will not fit. Because this model carries the -S magnet code, CMSE or DMSE reed and solid-state switches can be mounted directly on the hard-anodized aluminium body for end-of-stroke detection. In practice, plan on about 334 N (roughly 34 kg) of usable push at 0.5 MPa, or expect it to lift about 28 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin.

Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
A 20 mm stroke and 556.8 N at 0.5 MPa is enough to fold flaps or seat cartons on a filling line, and the spring return clears the station the moment air is removed.
With the -S magnet fitted, a CMSE switch on the body confirms retraction of a small bracket or workpiece before the next cycle on an assembly fixture starts.
The short body, about 50% shorter in mounting length than an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, pushes finished pins out of a drilling jig where space behind the plate is minimal.
Size up or down by force: the 32 mm bore gives 352.5 N at 0.5 MPa while the 50 mm bore reaches 875.5 N, so the 40 mm sits in the middle at 556.8 N. If your process must hold position on air loss, remember the spring drives the rod home instead - a double-acting ACE would suit that job better. This unit has a female M8x1.25 rod thread and a 1/8" PT port; FA/FB flange, LB foot and CA/CB clevis mountings are available. Since ASP40X20S is discontinued, order the ASE40X20 as the drop-in successor and confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.
Replacement checklist
At 0.5 MPa the push force is 556.8 N and at 0.7 MPa it is 808.1 N, both already net of the return spring. It is a single acting push cylinder: air extends the rod, the spring retracts it, and a minimum of 0.2 MPa is needed to overcome the spring. Operating range is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi) with a 1.5 MPa (215 psi) proof pressure, speed 50-500 mm/s, and the rod is 12 mm with an M8x1.25 female thread on a 1/8" PT port.
Order the ASE40X20, the current-production ISO 21287 successor: swap the P for an E and you get the same 40 mm bore, 20 mm stroke and force class in a matching short body. Confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions against your fixture before swapping, since the ASP was built to a DIN-standard compact format. The fixed TPU bumpers at both ends and the optional -S magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches carry over in the range.
