This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ASE40X20SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ASE40X20SB in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X20SB is a single acting, push (spring return) DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø40mm bore and 20mm stroke, 1/8" air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ASE40X20SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
A single acting push cylinder with spring return, the ASP40X20SB extends its 12 mm rod with air and retracts it by spring, delivering 556.8 N of push at 0.5 MPa (808.1 N at 0.7 MPa), already net of the spring. This model is discontinued; the current-production successor is the ASE40X20, which matches the same bore, stroke and force class - confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.
The short ISO 21287 body saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it slots into tight jigs, guards and gantries. The 40 mm bore runs from just 0.2 MPa, so a single air line is enough. At 0.5 MPa plan for about 334 N of real work rather than the full rating, which means this unit lifts roughly 17 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. The S code fits the magnet, so CMSE or DMSE switches can be mounted, and the B code gives a male rod thread with a 1/8" PT port.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ASE40X20SB (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force (spring return) |
|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 556.8 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 808.1 N |
Single-acting push: air extends the rod; the return spring retracts it. Forces already net the spring; minimum working pressure is 0.2 MPa.
| ASP | DIN compact cylinder (single-acting push, spring-return, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 40 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×20 | Stroke length in mm. |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
Clamps small aluminium brackets on an assembly bench with 556.8 N at 0.5 MPa; the spring retracts the platen the moment air is cut.
The 20 mm stroke nudges a folded carton onto a conveyor belt, and the short body fits under a low guard rail where a full-length cylinder cannot.
With the fitted -S magnet and a DMSE switch, the rod position confirms a steel part is seated before a welding robot starts.
Size between bores: a 32 mm bore pushes 352.5 N at 0.5 MPa while this 40 mm bore gives 556.8 N, and stepping up to 50 mm reaches 875.5 N - pick the smallest bore that clears your load with margin. Remember the spring pulls the rod home on air loss, so it will not hold a mid-stroke position. FA/FB flange, LB foot or CA/CB clevis mounting bolts to the same face, and CMSE / DMSE switches work because this model carries the optional -S magnet. Order the ASE40X20 as the current drop-in replacement.
Replacement checklist
Push is 556.8 N at 0.5 MPa and 808.1 N at 0.7 MPa, both already net of the return spring. Working pressure is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi) with 1.5 MPa (215 psi) proof; at least 0.2 MPa is needed to overcome the spring. Speed range is 50-500 mm/s and the 1/8" PT port serves the 40 mm bore.
The ISO 21287 short body cuts about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, ideal for tight jigs and gantries. A fixed TPU bumper pads both ends of travel; it does not lock or hold a load, and on air loss the spring simply returns the rod. FA/FB flange, LB foot and CA/CB clevis all bolt to the same face.
