This model is discontinued

AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ASE40X5SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ASE40X5SB in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X5SB

The AirTAC Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X5SB is a single acting, push (spring return) DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø40mm bore and 5mm stroke, 1/8" air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ASE40X5SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.

About the Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X5SB

A single acting push cylinder with spring return, the ASP40X5SB extends its 12 mm rod with air and lets the internal spring pull it back home, so only one air line is needed and 0.2 MPa is enough to beat the spring. This 40 mm bore delivers 556.8 N of push at 0.5 MPa (808.1 N at 0.7 MPa), already net of the spring, through a 5 mm stroke with a 1/8" port and a male rod thread from the B code. The hard-anodized aluminium body keeps the mounting length about 50% shorter than an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it slots into tight fixtures and guarding where a full-length body will not fit.

Because the S code is in this model number, the optional -S magnet is fitted, so CMSE or DMSE reed and solid-state switches can be clamped on for end-of-stroke signalling. A fixed TPU bumper at each end decelerates the rod, and when air is lost the spring simply returns the rod to its retracted home position rather than holding a mid-stroke stop. In practice the 556.8 N rating supports roughly 334 N (about 34 kg) of real working load at 0.5 MPa, or lifts about 28 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin. Note this model is discontinued: the current-production drop-in is the ASE40X5, so confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ASE40X5SB (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush force (spring return)
0.5 MPa556.8 N
0.7 MPa808.1 N

Single-acting push: air extends the rod; the return spring retracts it. Forces already net the spring; minimum working pressure is 0.2 MPa.

Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).

Where the Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X5SB Is Used

precision_manufacturing

Fixture clamp on a compact CNC jig

The 5 mm stroke and 556.8 N push at 0.5 MPa clamp small machined parts against a hard stop, and the short body fits where an ISO 15552 profile cylinder cannot.

sensors

Presence confirm on an assembly station

With the -S magnet fitted, a CMSE switch signals full extension as the rod seats a connector or latch, all from a single air line.

packaging

Eject pin on a packaging line

Air pushes a light carton or tray off a conveyor stop with about 334 N of usable force, and the spring retracts the pin instantly when pressure drops.

Replacing the Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X5SB with the ASE40X5SB

Size the job both ways: if 556.8 N at 0.5 MPa is more than you need, the 32 mm bore gives 352.5 N; if you need more, the 50 mm bore reaches 875.5 N at the same pressure. Keep the working load near 334 N (about 60% of rating) for long seal life, and remember the spring returns the rod on air loss instead of holding position. The male rod thread suits I/Y knuckles and threaded linkages, while FA/FB flange, LB foot and CA/CB clevis mounts bolt to the same face family. If you need position feedback, this S-coded unit already carries the optional -S magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches. For new projects, order the ASE40X5 instead - it is the current ISO 21287 successor in the same bore, stroke and force class.

Replacement checklist

  • ✓ Current-production ACE → ASE40X5SB
  • ✓ Same bore / stroke / force class
  • ✓ Confirm ISO 21287 mounting dimensions
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT / G)
  • ✓ Add -S for magnet if you need sensors

Airtac ASP Single Acting Guided Compact Cylinder ASP40X5SB FAQ

At 0.5 MPa it pushes 556.8 N and at 0.7 MPa it pushes 808.1 N, both already net of the return spring. It needs at least 0.2 MPa to extend against the spring, runs on air filtered to 40 um at 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi), proof pressure is 1.5 MPa (215 psi), temperature range is -20 to +70 C and speed is 50-500 mm/s. If air is lost, the spring drives the rod back to its retracted home position; it does not hold a mid-stroke position or act as a brake.

No - the ASP family is discontinued and no longer in production. The current-production replacement is the ASE40X5 (swap the P for an E), an ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same 40 mm bore, 5 mm stroke and force class. Before swapping, confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions against your fixture, since the ASP follows the older DIN-standard compact format. This unit's male rod thread, 1/8" port and fitted -S magnet for CMSE / DMSE switches carry over to the equivalent ASE configuration.
