A 3/2 valve has three ports — supply, outlet and exhaust — and two states. It either feeds the outlet or vents it to exhaust, and that is the whole job.
That makes it the right valve for a single-acting (spring-return) cylinder, on/off air blow, a clamp, switching a vacuum generator or suction cup, and piloting a larger valve.
It cannot run a double-acting cylinder. A double-acting cylinder needs air alternately on two sides, which takes a 5-port valve — the AirTAC 4V series.
A 14-station base turns a crowded backplate of single valves into one ordered block with one feed and one wiring route.
Individual 3/2 stations can drive small air jets for thread guidance or lint cleaning along the machine frame.
Retrofitting an older line often means piloting many larger valves from one point, which a shared manifold does with a single feed.

For each valve state NC or NO, the port size, one of the five coil voltages, and DIN plug or flying lead - the state decides what the outlet does on power loss, the port must suit the actuator, and the voltage must match the supply because coils are not field-convertible. If the project needs those numbers before you can quote to your own customer, the AirTAC 3V2 and 3V3 bodies publish them; a double-acting cylinder is a job for the 4V series, never a 3/2 valve.
