The AirTAC Airtac SCD Standard Cylinder SCD80X400S is a genuine double-acting DOUBLE-ROD air cylinder: the Ø25mm piston rod extends from BOTH end caps, giving equal effective area — and therefore equal force — in push and pull. Ø80mm bore, 400mm stroke, PT3/8 ports and adjustable end cushioning.
The SCD80X400S provides a balanced 2268 N of thrust in both extend and retract at 0.5 MPa, rising to 4082 N at 0.9 MPa, thanks to its symmetrical double-rod design. The 25 mm diameter rod passes through both end caps, giving you a rear rod extension that is ideal for mounting a sensor flag, a mechanical stop, or secondary tooling without adding offset load.
This model includes a built-in magnet (-S suffix), so CMSG, DMSG, or EMSG solid-state sensors can be clamped directly onto the tie-rod barrel for reliable, non-contact position sensing. The 400 mm stroke is well within the 1500 mm maximum for this bore, and the adjustable pneumatic cushion at each end (28 mm long) decelerates the piston smoothly. Ports are PT3/8, and the body length A(SCD) is 257 mm.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC SCD (double-rod) datasheet. Because the rod runs through both caps, the effective area is (bore² − rod²) in both directions. Confirm against the product label before installation. Thread options: PT (standard) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 2268 N | 2268 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 3175 N | 3175 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 463 kgf | |
Push and pull are EQUAL on a double-rod cylinder — both chambers lose the rod area, so effective area = (bore² − rod²) each way. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure; size with a safety margin.

The rear rod drives a secondary shuttle plate while the front rod moves the primary load, synchronizing two operations from one cylinder with equal force and speed in both directions.
The built-in magnet on the SCD80X400S lets you clamp a CMSG or DMSG sensor onto the barrel to detect piston position. The rear rod can also carry a physical flag for a redundant limit switch.
With a rod secured at both ends, the SCD80X400S offers better resistance to rotation than a single-rod cylinder, making it suitable for pressing or straightening fixtures where rod twist must be minimized.
Step up to the SCD100 bore if you need 3681 N at 0.5 MPa; step down to the SCD63 for 1402 N. Because both ends of the rod are exposed, this cylinder is not a drop-in replacement for a single-rod SC unit—the overall length is longer. For a direct SCD swap, match the 80 mm bore, 400 mm stroke, PT3/8 ports, basic mounting, and the magnet option.
At this 400 mm stroke, the long unsupported rod can experience bending under side loads. If your application imposes any lateral force, do not rely on the through-rod alone for guidance; pair the cylinder with an external linear guide or switch to a dedicated guided cylinder to protect the rod bearings and seals.
Double-rod checklist
Push and pull forces are identical because the rod area is subtracted from both sides of the piston. At 0.5 MPa you get 2268 N, at 0.7 MPa it is 3175 N, and at the maximum operating pressure of 0.9 MPa the output is 4082 N in either direction.
Choose the SCD when you need equal force and speed in both directions, a rear rod extension for mounting tooling or sensors, or improved resistance to rod rotation. If you only need a single working end and want a shorter overall length, the SC single-rod series is a better fit.
